View full detailsWhen you’re diagnosing a fault or commissioning a system, the “right” tool is the one that gets you to a reliable decision fast — without guesswork. This collection brings together HVAC/R test and measurement gear for electrical checks, refrigeration diagnostics, airflow/IAQ and temperature logging, so you can build a kit that suits the work you actually do day-to-day.
| What you’re checking | Tool type to start with | Common add-ons |
|---|---|---|
| Refrigerant pressures, superheat/subcool | Digital manifolds (2-valve) or digital manifolds (4-valve) | Clamps, temp probes, hoses, cases |
| Evacuation quality (microns) & dehydration | Evacuation kits / micron measurement | Vacuum-rated hoses, pump oil, spare seals |
| Electrical faults, inrush, control issues | Clamp meters and multimeters | Leads, clips, temperature clamps, cases |
| Airflow, static pressure, filter/coil restriction | Manometers & differential pressure and anemometers | Pitot tubes, hoses, airflow hoods/balancing |
| Heat exchange, supply/return, dew point | Thermometers & probes | Pipe clamps, surface probes, data logging |
| Leak searching & verification | Refrigerant leak detectors | Replacement filters, O-rings, sensor care items |
1) The measurements you actually need. Start with the jobs that make you money: electrical checks, pressure/temperature, evacuation integrity, airflow and leak verification. Buying “everything” usually means buying the wrong thing first.
2) Probe & accessory compatibility. A lot of the value lives in the add-ons — pipe clamps, surface probes, spare filters, hoses and carry cases. If you’re expanding an existing kit, confirm connection types and any required adapters.
3) Jobsite practicality. Think about screen readability in plant rooms, one-handed use on ladders, magnetic hang points, protective housings, and whether you want app/Bluetooth logging for reports and repeat service work.
4) Safety & licensing. Electrical testing and repairs should only be carried out by suitably qualified/licensed people. Refrigerant circuit work that could cause leakage requires the correct Refrigerant Handling Licence in Australia. For the rules and guidance, see the DCCEEW RAC technician guidance and the ARC Refrigerant Handling Codes of Practice.
Most techs start with electrical testing (clamp meter/multimeter), temperature probes, and the right refrigeration diagnostics for their work (manifold/probes, evacuation verification, and leak detection). Build outward based on your most common callouts.
Choose based on workflow and the systems you service. 2-valve setups can suit many service tasks, while 4-valve options can support more complex charging/evacuation processes. If you’re unsure, compare features and what’s included on each product page.
A manometer measures pressure (including differential/static pressure), which is useful for diagnosing restriction and duct performance. An anemometer measures air velocity/flow, useful for airflow verification and balancing work.
Leak detection is often part of licensed refrigeration work. If the task involves the refrigeration circuit or could cause refrigerant leakage, make sure it’s carried out by appropriately licensed people and follow the relevant codes of practice.
Common spares include probe tips/clamps, meter leads and clips, batteries, protective cases, and leak detector filters/O-rings (where applicable). Keeping consumables ready reduces downtime on service calls.
