Fieldpiece SCM4 Carbon Monoxide Meter — Trade-Grade CO Detection for HVAC/R Technicians

The Fieldpiece SCM4 is a handheld carbon monoxide meter designed for HVAC/R technicians who need fast, reliable CO readings on the job. With an electrochemical smart sensor, real-time and MAX hold display, and a field-replaceable sensor design, the SCM4 is built for walk-around diagnostics — from checking heat exchangers and flue stacks to investigating CO sources in residential and light commercial buildings.

If you're servicing gas appliances, checking combustion equipment, or investigating CO complaints, the SCM4 gives you a fast, clear reading without the bulk of a full combustion analyser.

Key Features

  • Electrochemical smart sensor — measures 0 to 1,000 ppm CO
  • Dual backlit display shows real-time and MAX readings simultaneously
  • ZERO button for quick ambient calibration in the field
  • Audio and visual alarms with MUTE function — alarm rate increases with CO concentration
  • Magnetic hanger for hands-free operation in tight spaces
  • Auto Power-Off (APO) to preserve battery — easy to disable
  • Battery level indicator shows remaining % at a glance
  • Field-replaceable CO sensor (RCM4) — pre-calibrated, approximately 2-year service life

What's Included

  • Fieldpiece SCM4 Carbon Monoxide Meter
  • 9V battery (installed)
  • Operator's manual

Soft carry case available separately — see Fieldpiece accessories.

How the Walk-Around Test Works

The SCM4 is designed for quick CO source identification. Zero the unit outdoors away from any CO source, then enter the building and walk toward areas of higher concentration. The dual display and escalating alarm help you zero in on the source efficiently. Note: the unit will not zero if ambient CO is above 5 ppm.

Important: CO detection and gas appliance servicing may require a licensed gas fitter or relevant trade qualification depending on your state or territory. Always confirm licensing and compliance requirements with the relevant authority before undertaking gas-related work.

Sensor Replacement

The SCM4 uses the Fieldpiece RCM4 replacement CO sensor, which comes pre-calibrated from the factory. Sensor life is approximately two years under normal use — repeated exposure to high CO concentrations will shorten sensor life. Replacement is straightforward: remove the old sensor, plug in the new RCM4, and the SCM4 auto-calibrates to factory standards.

Keep a spare RCM4 sensor in your kit to avoid downtime. Browse Fieldpiece test and measurement accessories.

Best For

  • HVAC/R technicians checking for CO around heat exchangers, flue stacks, and combustion appliances
  • Gas appliance service and maintenance (confirm licensing requirements)
  • Residential and light commercial CO source investigation
  • Building inspectors and facilities teams requiring a portable CO check tool
  • Apprentices and technicians building out a diagnostic tool kit

Check Before Ordering

  • Confirm the SCM4 suits your specific application and measurement range (0–1,000 ppm)
  • Check whether your state or territory requires a licensed gas fitter for CO-related appliance work
  • The SCM4 measures CO only — it is not a combustion analyser and does not measure CO2, O2, or flue gas temperature
  • Sensor life is approximately 2 years — factor in RCM4 replacement sensor cost for ongoing use
  • Soft carry case is not included — order separately if required
  • Confirm warranty terms with HVAC Trade Supply before ordering

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the Fieldpiece SCM4 measure?

The SCM4 measures carbon monoxide (CO) concentration in parts per million (ppm), with a range of 0 to 1,000 ppm using an electrochemical smart sensor.

Is the SCM4 a combustion analyser?

No. The SCM4 is a dedicated CO meter. It does not measure CO2, O2, flue gas temperature, or other combustion parameters. If you need full combustion analysis, consider a dedicated combustion analyser.

How long does the CO sensor last?

Approximately two years under normal use. Sensor life depends on exposure frequency and CO concentration levels. The replacement sensor is the Fieldpiece RCM4, which comes pre-calibrated.

Does the SCM4 need calibration?

The SCM4 has a ZERO button for quick ambient calibration in the field. The replacement RCM4 sensor comes pre-calibrated from the factory. For formal calibration requirements, confirm with Fieldpiece or your relevant authority.

Is a soft case included?

No — the soft carry case is available separately. Contact us or browse Fieldpiece accessories for compatible cases.

Do I need a licence to use a CO meter in Australia?

Using a CO meter for detection purposes generally does not require a licence. However, any gas appliance servicing or repair work identified as a result may require a licensed gas fitter. Licensing requirements vary by state and territory — confirm with the relevant authority before undertaking gas-related work.

What is the warranty on the SCM4?

Confirm current warranty terms with HVAC Trade Supply at the time of purchase. Fieldpiece tools are generally supported by a manufacturer warranty — refer to the product documentation for full details.

How fast is delivery?

We dispatch orders Australia-wide. Delivery times vary by location — see our shipping information page for current estimates and options.
